Taking the escape room challenge up a notch, Sandbox VR equips team players with the gaming gear to engage in the experience in virtual reality (VR). The world’s first VR escape room officially launched in Singapore last week, after debuting in Hong Kong last June.
Combining VR hardware tech and real-time motion capture rigs, the brand offers two game options: Deadwood Mansion and Curse of Davy Jones.
The former tasks players with the operation of chasing down a deranged doctor suspected of conducting illegal experiments in his mansion, while the latter gets you to embark on a treasure hunt to find the lost riches of Davy Jones before the clock runs out.
Your surroundings may look totally out-of-this-world in the virtual landscape, but real life just isn’t as glamorous. First, you’ll have to suit up in the green room with a VR head-mounted display, a headset, a backpack PC, a haptic tactsuit to allow you to feel every hit, and motion capture devices strapped to your wrists and ankles. Very Ready Player One.
Groups of players from two to six are welcome to step up to the plate, but take note that the difficulty level increases with the number of people, so you’ll have to get your head in the game if you want all your buddies in the same room. You’re free to skulk around the space as much as you wish (with motion sensor cameras monitoring your movements), but you won’t have to contort your body into any odd positions.
Even if you’re new to all this, fret not. There’ll be a 15-minute introduction before you get all geared up for half an hour in the gaming world, followed by a 15-minute debrief.
Oh, and no pressure, but your video highlights will be available to watch on Sandbox VR’s Facebook page, so good luck with attempting to strike a cool pose while striving for mission success.
