First, it was Nathan Hartono who finished as runner-up in last year’s Sing! China competition. Then we had Joanna Dong who recently wowed the judges with her mouth trumpet improv. And now we have another impressive contender from our shores: 18-year-old Curley Gao who belted out a beautiful melody on the Sing! China stage in an episode that aired last Friday (Jul 28).

The Dunman High School Secondary Three student migrated to Singapore at the age of nine. She flew all the way to China alone to perform Sodagreen’s “Incomparable Beauty”, and her performance got industry veterans Eason Chen and Na Ying to turn around near the end, wowing both of ’em despite being just 18.
While Curley said she was initially apprehensive of making her way alone to join the competition, she decided to give it a go as turning 18 ushered in a new phase of her life. For her impressive performance, Curley is currently the “人气学员” (most popular participant), which was announced on Sing! China’s Facebook page. She eventually picked Na Ying as her mentor, as she is her mother’s favorite singer.
