For those of us, uh, no-longer-quite-youths, our brains pretty much automatically associate the phrase “custom PC” with “gamer” or “gen Z” (or gen Z gamer). After all, if you don’t work in a graphics-related field, how the heck are you supposed to know what graphics card you want to add? And remind us again what RAM actually does? But then, on one fateful day as it came time for that mind-numbingly overwhelming experience that is shopping for a new PC, we wondered if perhaps building our own ideal PC from scratch would actually turn out to be a good investment in the long run. We’re also always down to support local brands, and as a proud Singaporean company with a huge catalog, AFTERSHOCK PC seemed like the perfect custom PC brand for us to check out.

Here are a couple of surprising first impressions that we, as non-Gen Z’s, non-gamers, non-geeks, had:

The power to do everything you need

Gaming is known to require a powerful computer that’s not going to go into meltdown mode when you’re elbow deep in your favorite game and poised for that kill shot. That’s no surprise. But not just gamers need powerful machines at their fingertips – today’s content creators often need even more powerful computers than gamers. Graphic design, video editing, animation, 3D modeling, and live streaming: the list of heavy apps requiring some serious juice goes on.

And let’s not forget the modern work-from-home crew. Your device needs to have enough RAM (and all that other good stuff) so that you can simultaneously attend that Zoom meeting while keeping more than 40 Google Chrome tabs open at the same time (yes, we know you do that), and your team’s messaging channels running in the back. AFTERSHOCK PC’s computers – both desktops and laptops – are powerful and can suit gaming and creative needs in one package.

Powerful graphics cards and sparkling monitors

If you use your computer for visual-heavy tasks (such as video editing, graphic design, or gaming), then you know that it’s crucial to have a good graphics card, also known as a GPU.

But the type of graphics card you need will also depend on the type of monitor you have. Do you want to play the latest AAA games at ultra settings in 4K resolution at 60 frames-per-second? Well, prepare to sell your left kidney and eat instant ramen for a year to save enough for an RTX 4090. Higher resolution, fps and gaming settings means your card needs muscle.

If you are like most, you probably don’t need more than 60fps and 1440p monitor resolution to enjoy games (shout out to the gamers still rocking 1080p), so you can save some cash and tone down the graphics card purchase.

AFTERSHOCK PC’s workstation and gaming builds have these bases covered at various budget ranges and are good for gaming and content creation.

It doesn’t look overly “game-y”

Looks might not be everything, but, let’s face it — they still count. We’re going to be honest and admit that we’re, frankly, turned off by laptops or desktops that look like a robot Transformer at a disco party, especially if we’re setting up a home office or need to use the machine in a professional setting. While you can go down the distinct, neon-bright route if you want while assembling your PC (jokes aside, there is nothing wrong with that), it’s nice that AFTERSHOCK PC’s options are sleek, subtle and don’t look like concept art from a sci-fi film. (Could include

A huge selection of accessories (that you can check out in person!)

Computer shopping doesn’t start and stop with just the hardware and software. AFTERSHOCK PC has pretty much everything a person would need and then some (think fun extra add-ons to customize your setup and really make it yours). Keyboards (some built just for gaming) with different colors and wireless options, beastly speaker systems, headsets, streaming decks, and microphones (the latter for the ambitious streamers out there). AFTERSHOCK PC has all of the above and more. Want to see it for yourself before placing an order? Head on over to AFTERSHOCK PC’s flagship showroom in Suntec City, where you can test out their wide range of hardware add-ons, including items from partner brands like Logitech and Razer.

Basically, as you can tell, we’re sold on the idea of custom PC’s, even as working professionals. Despite the seemingly high price tags, the prices at AFTERSHOCK PC are actually quite competitive given the amount of customization options available, not to mention the products’ overall longevity. They’re sturdy, reliable, cost-effective in the long run, and if we do have any questions, then AFTERSHOCK PC is fantastic and always ready to help out.
