What a year it is for the Singapore music scene. Next week, local grindcore band Wormrot will be the first Singaporean outfit to play in Glastonbury — the largest greenfield festival in the world and one of the globe’s most prominent music festivals. In a few months, two more local bands will be reppin’ the +65 at what’s arguably one of Japan’s most prestigious music events: Summer Sonic Festival. Pop quartet The Sam Willows and batucada-reggae ensemble Wicked Aura will be rocking the Island Stage in Tokyo come Aug 20.
To give you an idea how major the festival is, perennial rock band Foo Fighters (who are playing here in August!) will headline in a star-studded international line-up that includes the likes of BABYMETAL, Royal Blood and Phoenix, among many others.
In case you’re not up to speed on the local music scene, this isn’t the first time that Singaporean acts have appeared in the festival. Alternative rock band Caracal and jazz outfit The Steve McQueens made their mark during the 2015 edition, while singer-songwriter Linying took the stage last year. Last year’s event saw 65,000 people turning up on Sunday alone, according to the Japan Times, so expect an even bigger crowd come August 2017.
