Sure, Yishun’s got a bad rep. The “Murderer and Siao Lang” town has made headlines for one too many bizarre/gruesome/crazy crimes — someone even turned it into a horror flick — but at its heart, it’s just another neighborhood filled with (mostly) good people who simply want to live their lives without their address being the butt of jokes.
Enter People’s Studio, a creative residency programme that highlights works by emerging artists at an unconventional void deck pop-up in Yishun. Revolving around the theme of “Future Living”, the exhibitions will spread across the month of March at Blk 844, Yishun Street 81, as part of this year’s Singapore Design Week.
Brought to you by new art and design firm Neighborhood — where one of the co-founders is a longtime Yishun resident — the installations will showcase the works of writers, musicians, fashion label owners, and more.
First up, multidisciplinary designer Marcus Gee (until Mar. 30), who will display his Visual Portfolio graphic design works alongside indie publication Mynah Magazine‘s Posters (until Mar. 30) from its Issue #2.
Next, artist collective Atypical (Mar. 17-30), a group of six recent graduates from School of the Arts, and their pop-up exhibition using everyday objects to spotlight the creative potential of a typical HDB estate.
Then there’s the Youth Manifesto (Mar. 17-30), which features the works of five young poets Jollin Tan, Pranamika Subhalaxmi, Samuel Lee, Werner Kho, and Wahid Al Mamun.
Also featured in the programme: hip-hop musician Subhas’ Man on a Mission mixtape (until Mar. 30), collective and fashion label Youths in Balaclava’s Chapter 9, a multimedia vision of youth culture for the future, and projects by students from the National University of Singapore, LASALLE College of the Arts, and Ngee Ann Polytechnic.
Pop by to see a different side of the Yishun you thought you knew.
People’s Studio 2018 is on from now till Mar. 30, daily 11am-6pm at the void deck of Blk 844 Yishun St 81.
