Crazy rich people problems never looked as good as they do in the first trailer for the film adaption of Kevin Kwan’s Crazy Rich Asians, which debuted yesterday. It’s a whirlwind of everything you could ever dream of when you think affluent luxury and high society — opulent mansions, over-the-top parties, glamorous get-ups, and lavish romances.
Besides being one of the first Hollywood films to feature an all-Asian cast in what seems like forever, the glitzy rom-com directed by Jon M. Chu (G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Jem and the Holograms) also spotlights a couple familiar local faces, including Singapore-based TV presenter Henry Golding as lead character Nick Young, alongside the likes of Fiona Xie, Tan Kheng Hua, and Pierre Png.
Best of all, the trailer shows off the flashy and fabulous side of Singapore, with quick glimpses of scenes shot at CHIJMES, Gardens by the Bay, and Marina Bay Sands.
If you haven’t heard, the story follows Fresh Off the Boat star Constance Wu’s Rachel Chu, a Chinese-American professor who is in for the ride of her life when she says yes to meeting her boyfriend Nick’s family in Singapore. It’s only when she’s introduced to the ultra-rich scene he was born into that she realizes he’s like the Prince Harry of Asia.
Of course, with this fancy jet-setting lifestyle comes an upper-crust social etiquette and the pressure of exceedingly high expectations, and Michelle Yeoh’s icy matriarch is the perfect incarnation of that.
The claws are out, and we can’t wait for August to arrive.
