So, Crazy Rich Asians came and went (well, maybe it’s still showing in a couple of cinemas around town) — as did all the hype and controversy swirling around it. But just when you thought you’d moved on to the next Thing To Talk About, the book-turned-movie-adaptation is back on your news feed.
It looks like people are still looking to capitalize on the buzz that the film brought to Singapore: A number of local tour operators have jumped on the bandwagon to offer up itineraries inspired by the characters that we saw on the silver screen.
Take Klook, for example. The travel activities platform features a “Crazy Rich Asians Sightseeing Excursion in Singapore“, which takes you to some of the spots seen in the romcom, including Marina Bay Sands and Newton Food Centre.
If you don’t have the cash to splash, an experience for four will set you back $88, and you’ll get a three-hour car charter in a basic vehicle, with no food or entrance fee for attractions included. To do it Crazy Rich Asians style though, the $3,800 “ultimate experience” for four offers a 12-hour charter in a classier car, complete with spa treatments, a private yacht charter, and dining in the Singapore Flyer — plus 15 minutes of taking out a supercar for a spin.
A bit closer to home, Jane’s SG Tours regularly spotlights Crazy Rich Asians journeys (the next one’s on Oct 12; $120 per person), taking visitors across real and fictional locations from the film and novel, throwing in bits of local culture infotainment and history along the way.
Then there’s Wok ‘n’ Stroll — obviously specializing in food tours — and its culinary trail offering a behind-the-scenes look at the movie’s gorge-worthy pitstops. Over the course of three to four hours, you’ll traipse from Newton Food Centre to Joo Chiat, nibbling on dishes like fried carrot cake and roti prata along the way. Offered every Sunday at 6pm, the night adventure comes with a… well, not-so-crazy-rich price tag of $150 per person.
But to really immerse yourself in the world of Nick Young, Araminta Lee, and Astrid Leong-Teo, check out this Crazy Rich Asians fan tour, which is based on the book and claims to have been going on since 2014. It kicks off with guide Phil C. — who apparently knows everything about the characters and the people who inspired them — playing the role of Goh Peik Lin, picking you (Rachel Chu) up for the ride of your life.
A sample of the day’s private tour ($749; up to four people) — which can be switched up depending on your preference — includes visits to the “Star Trek House”, Holland Village for food, Eleanor Young’s “home”, and CHIJMES (the wedding venue of Colin Khoo and Araminta Lee).
Cool stuff, if you’d like to live a day in crazy rich Asians’ shoes.
