If you haven’t already heard (what on earth have you been doing?), Carouselland is back with a bang, and the event is bursting in full force with hundred sellers this weekend! That’s right, you’ll be able to shop till you drop from popular vendors from Carousell. You’ll be spoilt for choice at the massive convention, with everything from vintage clothing to artisanal crafts. Of course, there’ll be a whole bunch of food stalls and fun things to do as well, but why not get your hands on a spot for these hands-on workshops?

Now it’s rare for sellers to give out their trade secrets, but count yourselves lucky. Workshops of many different kinds will be on offer, and if you’re the type that likes to get hands dirty making unique, handmade items that sets you apart from everyone else, this one’s for you — mad props if you’re the type that’s serious about handmade gifts over buying presents.

We get to hear from talented entrepreneurs-slash-artists behind The Leather Society and Hey Izzy who will be running workshops on how to work with leather and make touch-activated lamps.

100% genuine about leather

“Every product is as strong as its weakest part”, and that’s the mantra behind homegrown brand The Leather Society. Helmed by 28-year-old Kamarul and 24-year-old Andre, The Leather Society pride themselves on their high quality, bespoke leather goods. A variety of products are available, from small leather goods such as key fobs and cardholders to bigger items, such as briefcases and bucket bags.

Soaked, cured, and sammed in the knowledge pool of business and finance and stitched together with a mutual love for quality leather goods, the pair are out to prove that young entrepreneurs have what it takes to run a business. Some of their bestselling products include their unique watch straps — which their customers love to pair with their luxury watches. No bull, they even have access to the same exotic leathers that popular luxury brands do.

Besides running a business, they are responsible for the burgeoning community of leather enthusiasts in Singapore. The Leather Society Facebook group now has over 900 members, where users trade knowledge and get feedback on their original creations.

Kamarul and Andre will be running their own Leather Crafting workshop across all three days. For SG$50/pax, attendees will get to learn about different types of leather, how to cut leather and even try their hand at making three small leather items! You’ll even get to emboss your initials on the multi-purpose leather pouch, luggage tag and key fob that you’ll be making. Spots are limited, so sign up now if you want to learn to work with leather!

Let these lamps light up your life

When he isn’t at his day job of being an E-learning Content Developer, Brenton from Hey Izzy makes upcycled, touch-activated lamps and guitar shelves out of vintage and everyday items. Their products aim to combine form and function, and improve sustainability. So what exactly does upcycling involve? Well according to Brenton, it’s like recycling — but better! You get to be in charge of the whole process, and throw in your own fun and artistic elements. That’s also exactly what you can expect from the one-of-a-kind items from Hey Izzy.

How do those touch-activated lamps even work? Well, great news as Brenton will be giving away his trade secrets at his Drink Can Touch Lamp Making workshop, and spoiler alert, it’s gonna be lit. The one-day-only workshop is happening this Sunday from 3pm-6pm. For SG$78/pax, you’ll be able to assemble and wire up their very own touch-activated lamps with a drink can. After all, it’s drink can, not drink cannot. Limited spots are available, so sign up now!

The Leather Society and Hey Izzy will be running their workshops at the ‘Craft’ and ‘Balance’ sections respectively at Carouselland this weekend! It’s all happening on August 16-18 at Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Halls A & B. For more information, head over to their Facebook page, and don’t forget to RSVP to their event here
