Camaca: New cafe at King Albert Park has swirls of gelato in the shape of massive macarons

There’s a new hangout in King Albert Park, and it’s home to a diet-busting mix of coffee, gelato, chocolate, and dessert. Hailing from Taiwan, with outlets in Malaysia and Shanghai, Camaca is the kind of sleek spot you wish your neighborhood had.

However, in an attempt to give such sweet treats a healthier makeover, the brand aims for recipes free of added sugar as much as possible which, given our recent realization regarding the horrific amounts of sugar in bubble tea, is much appreciated. (Did you know that a 500ml cup of brown sugar pearl milk has about 92g of sugar, three times more than a can of Coca-Cola?? Anyway, we digress.)

Camaca claims to have Singapore’s first “capsule pod gelato”, which is handmade and individually stored in a customized container to help “seal in” the flavors, according to the store. So you actually don’t get to bite into a massive macaron, as you would be led to believe just by glancing at the glass display, because the gelato is swirled out onto a cup when it’s served, and in the end, it looks just like any other soft serve.

But this technique is apparently used 1) for hygiene reasons, and 2) to create a smoother texture by keeping the gelato from being exposed to air or forming ice crystals.

It’s a novelty, for sure, but hey, if you’re in the area and you can’t turn down a good cup of gelato, the shop offers it in flavors like Swiss chocolate, raspberry mango, coconut, roasted oolong, and Musang King durian.
