In a surprise Facebook post last Friday (Aug 11), Pompompurin Cafe revealed to disappointed fans that Aug 20 would be its last day of operations. If you think that piece of news seems rather abrupt for an eatery that opened not too long ago, you’re right. Barely over a year old, the Orchard Central cafe’s announcement was met with netizens bemoaning its impending closure — some even lamented the fact that they hadn’t visited the space yet.

Speculations on the reasons for it shuttering included high rental cost, low foot traffic in the quiet corner of the mall, and expensive dishes that looked adorable but turned out to be rather average-tasting. Which really doesn’t come as a surprise for gimmicky cafés.

Anyway, with the overwhelming response on social media, it seems like the Sanrio character cafe could go out with a bang and receive a rush of first-time customers in its final week.

As for those of you who expect cutesy Sanrio withdrawals after Aug 20, there’s always Suntec City’s Gudetama Cafe or Changi Airport’s Hello Kitty Orchid Garden.
