Get egg-cited: Singapore’s first Gudetama Cafe is adorable — from the dishes to the decor

Lots of character cafes have arrived on our shores this year — from Hello Kitty to Pompompurin to Pokémon to Craftholic — but they’re all so adorable, we can’t really say we mind having them here. And judging by the amount of people who have been more than willing to get in long lines for a chance to check ’em out, this cutesy cafe trend isn’t going away anytime soon.

Gudetama Cafe

So we’re here to tell you all about Singapore’s first Gudetama Cafe, which opens on November 30 at the soon-to-be-bustling Suntec City. If you haven’t a clue who or what Gudetama is, it’s Sanrio’s lazy egg character that loves nothing more than being nua and snuggling in a bacon blanket (actually, that kinda sounds like a dream come true). In Singapore, it’ll appear all over the cafe with a mint leaf.

Since you can’t have a character cafe without making it totally Instagram-worthy, the space here is decked out with animated walls, giant waffles on the ceiling, egg-shaped booths and chairs, and even an egg carton that doubles as a table. You can also take plenty of selfies with the Gudetama water fountains in the main dining area and the indoor garden.

This collaboration between homegrown brands Joe & Dough and The Soup Spoon, as well as local food blogger Shirley Wong (known for her amazing bento art on Little Miss Bento), brings together a menu that highlights 10 mains, four sides and five desserts — of course, all of them feature the lazy egg in one way or another.

Menu items include the ‘I’m Cold’ Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict with mashed avocado on brioche toast, Rib-‘I’ Don’t Care of chargrilled angus ribeye slathered with creamy mushroom sauce, and lobster bisque with an onsen egg in a bread bowl.

TA-MA-GO

For dessert, you’ll be treated to prettily plated treats such as TA-MA-GO, which is basically cheesecake coated with rice crispies and topped with a sponge cake to appear like tamago sushi; as well as the ‘Shoyu Ramen’ Set, which looks just like the noodle dish, except it’s made of chocolate and feuilletine cake under chestnut mont blanc and Earl Grey jelly, and served with a side of panna cotta and rose tea.
