Makcik Chicken — the gourmet chicken rice makers who spared no expense in viral creative marketing — will no longer be the same anymore.

The founders of Makcik Chicken have made the decision to relinquish their ownership of the brand after they were bought over by an unnamed company. To the sadness of the Muslim customer base, the chicken rice vendors are not Halal-certified right now, as Makcik Chicken is no longer Muslim-owned. Nonetheless, business continues, and orders can still be made on the website. It is unclear for now if the food will be Halal-certified in due time under its new owners.

What this means, however, is the creative team behind Makcik Chicken’s excellent branding and marketing promotions will no longer be around as well. Their social media game has been surprisingly on point for a chicken rice outlet, with the brand utilizing witty copy, great design and current pop culture references, including Game Of Thrones, Rick and Morty, Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West, and more.

But the marketing would have been for naught if Makcik Chicken’s food couldn’t back it up. The brand had an atas take on the local classic, offering a gourmet spin on typical ingredients with sous vide chicken, hanjuku eggs, Japanese fragrant rice, and a “triple threat” of sauces.

Perhaps we should have seen this coming though. Late last month, the team put up a Facebook post that signaled some struggle in sustaining the business — they made an open call out to investors.

The call out was a success, it seems (considering the brand was bought out), but it’s a bittersweet farewell for the fans who loved Makcik Chicken’s style of creative marketing. Nonetheless, the popular chicken rice is still available to nosh on for now — or at least until the brand’s new owners decide to make some drastic changes.
