After a period of refurbishment, Grand Shanghai has now reopened with a modern look that still encapsulates its Shanghainese heritage. The restaurant has been around for two decades, and its updated decor pays tribute to the Old Shanghai of the 1930s, with Art Deco motifs and contemporary designs, all of which look towards the stage, where you can expect live entertainment nightly.
With crystal chandeliers hanging from the mirrored ceilings and green velvet banquettes lining the 200-seater dining room, the restaurant also offers four private rooms, two of which are connected to a plush lounge area.
If you’d rather mingle with the crowd and fix your eyes on the performers, take a table by the stage, which will feature musicians playing everything from traditional Chinese instruments to slow jazz.
In the kitchen is Master Chef Jacky Tang, who’s armed with 28 years of experience and takes inspiration from Hong Kong, Beijing, Sichuan, and Singapore for the new menu. Besides Shanghainese specialties, the selection also includes dim sum signatures and barbecued meats.
Duck dishes are a staple, especially when they look as intricate and impressive as the Light and Shadow Crispy Duck, which is a twist on the traditional beef rendition. These thin slices of duck, coated with a hint of wasabi, decorate a lavish osmanthus syrup tree-like sculpture.
Just as good is the crispy-skinned duck that’s smoked in tea for that earthy and floral aroma, and you can stuff it in the fluffy buns it’s served with. If you’re intrigued by the mix of Peking Duck and Shanghainese lamb wraps, the spiced crispy lamb comes in charcoal-grilled cubes with a cumin and paprika crust, alongside pancakes, scallions, cucumber, and garlic soy sauce.
Other dishes to try include fresh sliced abalone with pomelo vinegar and sake jelly, and deep-fried yellow croaker fish with roselle sauce.
At the bar, you’ll find a collection of wines, as well as rare Chinese spirits and liquors.
