8 cutest cafes in Singapore

Cake Love Bakery & Cafe

4 Jalan Pisang, 8222-5558.

Cake Love Bakery & Cafe, which is adorable in a Diner Dash kinda way, was developed from sugarcraft and cake-making school Cake Love Couture. Right off, you know that the cafe is for serious dessert lovers only. The store facade displays the lyrics of The Archies’ hit song “Sugar Sugar” and their menu is indundated with the kind of stuff dreams are made of: the Elvis pie made of banana, chocolate cream, peanut butter and vanilla pudding, hot chocolate cupcakes and fruity Italian sodas.

Charlie Brown Cafe

#04-01 Orchard Cineleisure, 8 Grange Rd., 6737-5979.

Do we really need to say more? Charlie Brown and Snoopy fans are encouraged to go crazy here, or else there would’ve been no need for that floor-to-ceiling mural and giant statue up front. The food’s not mindblowing — you’ll get some classic Western favourites like baked pasta, pizza and pancakes ($9.80 — 13.80) — but surely that’s not what you’re there for.

Eatplaylove Cafe

#01-07, 28 Aliwal St., 6444-6400.

This one’s for the kids — while you’re gorging on Thai and Western food like basil chicken (SGD8), green curry ($8) and cheesy tomato baked rice ($9.50), pay up $10 for them to have unlimited access to art materials. They can doodle, make paper puppets and mess with Shrink plastic while you catch up with your yummy mummy friends or sit out the hot sun.

Hatter Street

#01-333, 212 Hougang St. 21, 6988-4911.

Hatter Street features a chef owner who continuously aims to surprise customers with creativity and spontaneity in her dishes, just like the Mad Hatter scene out of Alice in Wonderland. Not to worry though, this “Mad Hatter” underwent training at Bo Innovation, a three-Michelin-starred restaurant in Hong Kong. Try their signature Whoa’ffles with homemade pandan ice cream and gula melaka ($8.90) to see why this quirky little cafe right smack in the heartlands is worth a mention.

La Marelle (top pic)

25A Baghdad St., 8138-7654.

If you don’t already know about this café, you’re not going to believe there’s one like it in Kampong Glam. The bright pink shopfront (and mind you that’s just the wall surrounding the stairwell entrance on the ground floor) adds a touch of crazy to the neighbourhood’s earthy tones and the café interiors? Fluffy clouds and giant raindrops painted onto brightly-coloured walls and an entire wall flaunting bags, stationery and accessories bearing French artist Pascale Nivet’s (brainchild of the La Marelle brand) whimsical designs… It’s like stepping into another world.

L’etoile Café

160 Owen Rd., 9004-0160.

There’s a bit of walk with this café, but it’s worth it. Every bit as whimsical as its name, the two-storey gem inspired by Japanese francophilia is decked in mismatched furniture and furnishings, white lace curtains, a brick coffee counter and whimsical wallpaper. The diverse—and in terms of typography, adorable—menu consists of all-day breakfast, soups, pastas and sandwiches, plus they sell knick knacks like stationery and postcards, all presumably imported.

The Tiramisu Hero Cafe

121 Tyrwhitt Rd., 6292-5271.

The Tiramisu Hero illustrations bounce all over the off-white walls in this light, airy space. That’s the key feature, but the two white ladder installations strung up with fairy lights at the point-of-purchase, as well as the astro turf “front lawn”, are also stand-outs. We also love the feature Tiramisu Hero head on the wall, which you can prop over yours for photos, as well as the dainty porcelain crockery you’re served with.

Windowsill Pies

78 Horne Rd., 9004-7827.

Pinocchio would’ve been right at home here. Everything’s wood, from the floors to the furniture — even the pièce de résistance, a cheerily painted pine tree, is entirely made of wood. You know how in Enid Blyton books, the fairy folk are always having a gathering out in the woods? Yup, it feels just like that at Windowsill. And the magic is amplified the moment you bite into one of their yummy desserts like The Grasshopper Pie ($7), but that’s another story…
