Us Singaporeans are a funny bunch. We rage against SMRT for train breakdowns and tap our feet impatiently while stuck in a traffic jam, but when it comes to waiting in line for hours just to try the latest food craze, we become the most tolerant people in the world.
Case(s) in point: BAKE Cheese Tart, Tai Cheong Bakery, Llaollao and fad cafes like the Hello Kitty and Pokémon ones. Of course, as any savvy impatient person would know, all you have to do to avoid the queues is wait a couple months for the hype to fade off. Because it inevitably will.
Anyway, now that castella cakes are the latest trend, here’s an alternative to LE Castella and Ah Mah Homemade Cake: Antoinette.
Yep, the patisserie known for its intricate desserts has just launched its castella cake collection, with the popular treats in six different flavors, no less.

Antoinette’s take on the cake is a little more delicate and fluffy than the traditional version, and it’s available in vanilla, vanilla cheese (basically the vanilla cake with a cheddar and parmesan glaze), Earl Grey, Earl Grey cheese, Nutella (again, vanilla cake slathered with the hazelnut spread), and ondeh ondeh, which is made with pandan leaves, coconut and gula melaka bits.
Try ’em out while you wait for the lines to die down at the other two newly-opened stores.
The Queen’s Castella Cake Collection is now available at Antoinette, 30 Penhas Rd. It will launch at Antoinette in Mandarin Gallery on Jul 22. $8-$15.
