‘70s Flashback: South Korea’s ‘Jinro’ soju back in Singapore stores

Slip on some bell bottoms and refresh those tastebuds with a blast from the ‘70s past with a soju bottled in nostalgia.

The popular South Korean booze aptly called Jinro is Back has returned with a fresh retro look decades after it vanished from shelves. The rice wine was sold as “Jinro” in the late ‘70s until it was discontinued in the 1980s. The new version comes in a clear, sleek blue bottle with a logo bearing Jinro’s toad mascot. 

It is now available from S$15.95 at Korean supermarkets and restaurants, including Kko Kko Na Ra, O.BBa Jjajang BBQ and Kim’s Family Korean Restaurant along Tanjong Pagar and Telok Ayer. 

Jinro is Back is manufactured by HiteJinro, which also produces the Chamisul fruity soju line commonly seen in Singapore. Its 16.9% alcohol content will definitely do some damage, despite being slightly reduced from its original formula of 17%. The company describes it as smooth and easy to drink, even for soju noobs, best served chilled and a good match for grilled meat dishes like pork belly and boiled pig’s trotters.
