Woman dies after collapsing in MRT train

A 26-year-old woman who collapsed on an MRT train yesterday morning has died, according to transportation officials.

They told media in a statement last night that Marielle Ann Joy Mar collapsed while on board a southbound train car approaching the Ortigas Station at about 9:50am.

According to CNN Philippines, she was carried out by security guards and rushed to the Victor R Potenciano Medical Center in Mandaluyong City. Emergency room staff tried to revive her, but she was declared dead at 12:05pm.

Mar’s official cause of death is not known because the family refused an autopsy, according to the Philippine Star.

Transportation officials say the trains were not overcrowded and the air conditioning was functioning properly at the time Mar was on board yesterday.

“DOTr and MRT-3 extend their sincerest condolences to the bereaved family of Ms. Mar, and has extended all necessary assistance, including defrayment of medical and funeral expenses,” the Department of Transportation said in a statement.

The death comes almost a month after a woman’s arm was sliced off between two MRT train cars at the Ayala Station, and two car trains completely decoupled in the middle of a trip.
