This train system needs serious fixing.

Two days after a woman got her arm sliced off after coming out of a train, passengers had to get out and walk after train cars detached at around 9am this morning.

Incredible.

“Around 130 to 140 passengers were evacuated by the combined security guards from Buendia and Ayala Station,” Transportation Undersecretary for Rails Cesar Chavez was quoted in CNN Philippines.

The passengers were escorted back to the Ayala station. No injuries were reported.

Filipinos seem to have gotten used to these occurrences that they even joke about it.

One passenger posted this photo on Facebook with a caption that read “The scene in the train. It was running and let go at the same time. Everything just leaves us, even the MRT. This sucks! Come back for us.”

While he may be making light of a horrible situation, the state of the train system, which carries over half a million passengers a day, is no laughing matter. The system was only built to carry 360,000 t0 380,000 passengers a day.

These life-threatening “glitches” and accidents are occurring while 48 trains worth PHP3.8 billion (US$74 million) remain unused. According to a Philippine Star report, the trains which were procured during the former administration, do “not have a signaling system.”

Transportation officials told media that operations returned to normal around 9:30am, whatever “normal” may mean to them.
