As the country continues to grapple with record-high Covid-19 cases, Vice President Leni Robredo has continued to be on top of pandemic response programs while quietly giving updates on social media.

In her latest post using her personal Facebook account, VP Robredo looked to another female leader, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, as a shining example. “There is a lot we can learn from [New Zealand’s] focus and decisiveness,” Robredo wrote.

Robredo shared a Facebook Live video from PM Ardern from August 18, which was made just as New Zealand began a nationwide lockdown following the detection of the country’s first Covid-19 case in six months. Robredo lauded the move, outlining nine achievements from the ongoing lockdown and citing New Zealand’s early testing and contact tracing.

Among the highlights, Robredo said, was that “They were able to timely arrest 107 chains of transmission.”

Furthermore, Robredo pointed out, “Mass testing continues. In Auckland alone, 10% of the region’s population were tested in just one week.” And, “While on lockdown, government is giving Wage Subsidies and Resurgence Payments to qualified recipients within 2 working days from application.”

The clincher, for Robredo, was Ardern’s personal handling of herself during the lockdown: “Effective communications by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern herself has enabled the public to be overwhelmingly supportive of the extended lockdown and the elimination approach being conducted.”
