A cleaner working at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) in Manila learned how much he was valued by the school after students, alumni, and employees raised funds to pay for his medical treatment.

Bea Aquino, an alumna of UST, wrote online last week to ask for donations for janitor Alvin Marbida, who was attacked by his own dog near his home in Manila. Thanks to Aquino’s post, PHP74,031 (US$1,524) was raised for Marbida’s treatment.

Aquino said in an interview with Coconuts Manila that she learned about her friend’s condition when he posted on Facebook. Raising funds for him was easy because her call for donation spread “like wildfire.”

“The money came from everyone in the UST community, specifically from the College of Science where he served. Our administrators, faculty, and students donated,” she said. “I think people are still donating because they want to help Alvin.”

At present, Marbida is still recovering from the dog attack. He has yet to report for work.

“Both of his arms and hands [were injured]. The dog bit him all the way to his bones. He couldn’t move his hands because a few nerves were hit,” Aquino said.

Coconuts Manila has reached out to Marbida but he has yet to respond to our messages.
