The Bureau of Immigration (BI) today announced that they’ve arrested 30 undocumented Indian nationals in Diliman, Quezon City — though it apparently wasn’t easy.

BI Commissioner Jaime Morente accused the Indians of resisting arrest on Wednesday and assaulting the BI agents, adding that they took from the suspects “several sharp objects and weapons, such as machetes.”

BI Intelligence Division Chief Fortunato Manahan, Jr., who was on the scene during the arrest, said that their agents were allegedly “assaulted and chased with machetes by the illegal aliens” during the operation.

“Thankfully no one got hurt,” Manahan said.

“The incident shows the risks that we encounter during operations. There was even an instance in the past when one of our men was shot in the performance of our duties,” he added. (Sure, bullets are practically part of the job description — but machetes!?)

Getting serious, Morente warned foreign nationals that the BI “will not tolerate foreign nationals living and working in the country without proper visas,” and warned that they “will not rest until all undocumented aliens in the Philippines are hunted down and deported back to their home countries.”

(OK, that’s a tad melodramatic, even for a dude recently chased with a machete.)

The alleged machete-wielding Indians were turned over to the BI’s legal division and are awaiting deportation.
