Fresh from typhoon Mangkhut, the northern region of the Philippines experienced another round of destruction with the arrival of typhoon Yutu yesterday.

In the town of Natonin in Mountain Province, four people died after a landslide buried the offices of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), reported Rappler.

The landslide affected three buildings belonging to the DPWH, according to CNN Philippines.

Rescuers are already digging through the disaster area, where several people are believed to remain buried. These include laborers, security guards, and evacuees.

According to regional disaster management chief Ruben Carandang some people went to the DPWH to seek shelter from the typhoon.

He told AFP: “It was not an evacuation center. But some sought shelter there, unfortunately.”

Meanwhile, in Kalinga, another landslide killed a 5-year-old-girl and injured two other people. ABS-CBN News reported that the landslide occurred in Barangay (village) Mabilong in the town of Labuagan.

Another landslide occurred in Barangay Batad, Banaue, Ifugao which killed Baltazar Pinnay and his children, Rydbell, Rhezel, and Rexibelle.

As the north recovers from the onslaught, Isabela province’s Cauayan airport will be closed for the next two days to assess the damage left by the typhoon, reported ABS-CBN News.

A photo posted by the Department of Transport on its Facebook account shows the roof of the passenger terminal almost completely destroyed by Yutu’s strong winds.

In its latest weather bulletin, weather bureau Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAG-ASA) said that Yutu is expected to exit the country later this afternoon.

Light to moderate rains is expected in the western section of northern and central Luzon as it leaves the country.
