Tarsiers retrieved in Zamboanga del Norte

Two Philippine tarsiers were found in the town of Godod in Zamboanga del Norte, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) confirmed.

Environment authorities acted upon a social media post that said the tiny primates were captured in the village of Delucot, which led to the tarsiers’ retrieval.

Both tarsiers were found to be healthy and in good condition and were soon returned to their natural habitat.

Tarsiers are nocturnal mammals that commonly live in forests, and are known to die or commit suicide once held in captivity, the DENR said.

The Philippine tarsier has seen its population significantly decline over the past years, and has been classified by the International Union of Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as nearly threatened.

Tarsiers are protected under the Wildlife Resources Act or Republic Act 9147, which prohibits the illegal capture or hunting of wild animals.

Philippine tarsiers are considered the second-smallest primate in the world, measuring just up to 15cm.
