A Taguig City policeman was arrested by his colleagues yesterday for allegedly extorting PHP20,000 (US$417) from an unidentified foreign national.
Chief Master Sergeant Mendy Gutierrez, who works in his city’s Vehicular Traffic Investigation Section, asked the foreigner for the said amount in exchange for his impounded car, which got involved in a crash. Gutierrez allegedly asked for the amount because the foreigner allegedly had to pay a “fine” in connection to the car accident.

The same foreign national also complained that Gutierrez also forced him to pay PHP500,000 (US$10,400) for the medical expenses of his victim in the car crash.
Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group (HPG) chief Brigadier General Alexander Tagum said that he is serious about rooting out bad apples from his organization.
“The public expects much of us law enforcers and what Gutierrez did has no excuse. The HPG is grateful for the victim’s trust so we could ensure that such a person will be held accountable for his crime,” he said.
