Sizzling heat in the days ahead, state weather bureau forecasts

Anyone out there feeling the sticky humidity and sweltering heat lately? Well, it’s not just you.

After recording a blistering 35-degree air temperature (with a 39-degree heat index, or “feels like” temperature) in Quezon City yesterday — the hottest day in Metro Manila so far this year — the state weather bureau is forecasting that there’s plenty more sweat in store for the days ahead.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said that the muggy weather is a result of the weakening amihan — the northeast monsoon previously responsible for bringing in January’s cool winds. This means the transition into habagat (or the southwest monsoon) will bring “warm, moist winds” to the city, while causing rains over the western portion of the country from May to September.

In the meantime, the “hot, dry season” will continue from now until May, with PAGASA’s five-day weather forecast predicting Metro Manila air temps of 35 degrees at the hottest, and 24 degrees at its coolest, with partly cloudy skies and rain showers to boot.

PAGASA weather specialist Ariel Rojas said in this afternoon’s weather report that easterlies, the winds from the Pacific Ocean that brought today’s hot and humid weather, are expected to persist this week. The public, meanwhile, is advised to adequately hydrate, and to carry umbrellas or other protection from the when out and about.
