Thieves hacking into your credit card is the stuff nightmares are made of, but that’s just what happened to Senator Sherwin Gatchalian.

Gatchalian, a pro-government lawmaker, tweeted today that hackers charged PHP1 million (US$20,804) worth of food to his credit card.

“My credit card has just been hacked! Someone ordered P1M worth of food from Food Panda in less than an hour. Is that lauriat for the whole village???” he asked.

A document attached to the tweet shows all the transactions supposedly made using Gatchalian’s credit card. The items were bought yesterday from FoodPanda, but the document doesn’t identify the stores from where purchases were made.

Like a lot of Pinoys online, television host Maan Macapagal appeared confused by what occurred.  “Your credit card company didn’t send you a message to confirm if you were indeed making these purchases before it allowed the transactions?” she asked.

Gatchalian explained that the hacker managed to change his bank-registered phone number, making it possible for the criminal to receive passwords.

“He knew what he was doing. I just don’t know how he will eat a million [pesos] worth of food,” the senator tweeted.

Quite a number of people were sympathetic to Gatchalian, but he also attracted several people who did not feel sorry for his plight. User @ricardoibanezzz wrote, “Does it hurt to discover that your money was stolen? That’s just loose change for you.”
