Senate to probe PHLPost on unliquidated PHP5 billion

Can billions of pesos be “misplaced” or “forgotten” so easily? Apparently…yes.

“The Philippine Postal Corp. (PHLPost) has allegedly accumulated PHP5 billion in unliquidated cash advances from the conditional cash transfer (CCT) program being administered by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD),” reports The Philippine Star.

The report explained that PHLPost “is one of the DSWD’s monetary conduits for the distribution of cash subsidies to indigent families under the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program.”

After the Commission on Audit (COA) discovered the huge amount in unliquidated funds, Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago called for an investigation into the matter.

Santiago was quoted as saying, “These monetary conduits should be investigated for their failure in exceeding one of the Aquino administration’s flagship program. I would not be surprised if PHLPost is not the only monetary conduit at fault.”

Santiago has filed a Senate resolution asking the Senate social welfare and rural development committee to conduct the inquiry. The committee is chaired by Sen. Nancy Binay.

Santiago added, “The President’s people made him look like a fool by convincing him that the CCT program is a success. The President even mentioned it in his recent SONA.”
