Scam alert: ‘Pet-napping’ a hot trend among scammers

A GMA News report reveals that when Virginia Pozon’s seven-year-old cat Pickle — of mixed Persian and Siamese breed — went missing last Dec 2, she and her family posted a lot of posters in order to find him.

The report noted: “On the day that her cat disappeared, CCTV footage taken in their neighborhood showed a man seemingly struggling with a cat from inside a vehicle.”

Much to Pozon’s surprise, she later got text messages from someone who claimed to have her cat. The texter told her that he or she would be able to return Pickle for a certain fee.

The texter also asked to meet Pozon at another location.

Skeptical about the texter’s true intentions, Pozon sought the help of the police.

The cops told Pozon not to entertain the text messages, as they were likely being sent by someone who just wanted to lure Pozon to a certain location in order to (most likely) rob her.

Luckily, Pickle was able to return to Pozon’s residence. The report didn’t explain, though, if the cat came back on its own or was found by someone else.
