Retired Davao archbishop urges Catholics to fast during Ramadan

Above all things, respect.

A retired archbishop in Davao, who was also a one-term president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, has urged non-Muslims to observe fasting during the Ramadan month.

The time and dates of Ramadan vary each year and is already underway this 2016.

It’s when Muslims worldwide commemmorate the first revelation of the Koran to the final prophet of god, Muhammad.

“We should promote this kind of activity as our way of dialogue with other religions,” said Fernando Robles Capalla.

He added that fasting is common to all religions, reports Hongkong-based Union of Catholic Asian News

“As one of our grounds of unity, we ask Christians and non-Muslims to observe solidarity fasting,” he said.

Fasting during Ramandan isn’t just about refraining from consuming food and drinks during daylight hours, though. It also includes abstaining from sex and increased devotion.

“It is a time for Muslims to contemplate on their belief and increase their faith by actively increasing in worship, prayer and reciting the Qur’an,” according to WhyIslam.org.
