The Philippine National Police announced today that it has formed a special investigation task group (SITG) to probe the shooting incident that killed two people in Manila’s main highway EDSA in broad daylight yesterday.

The SITG is now investigating the trajectory and crossmatching of the bullets that killed 62-year-old businessperson Jose Luis Yulo and his 51-year-old driver Allan Nomer Santos, GMA News reported. The two were aboard a white Toyota Hi-Ace van in EDSA-Reliance, Mandaluyong City when two unidentified motorcycle-riding gunmen attacked.

It happened at around 3:23pmThe Philippine Daily Inquirer reported. They reportedly came from a drag racing event in Clark, Pampanga.

In the vehicle with them was a certain Esmeralda Ignacio, 38 years old, who was wounded and was under observation in the Victor R. Potenciano Medical Center, the Philippine Star wrote.

Yulo and Santos were brought to the same hospital, Tempo reported, but they succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds.

Yulo sustained at least eight gunshot wounds, according to an autopsy by the SITG, Metro Manila police chief Director Guillermo Eleazar said, as reported by ABS-CBN News. 12 empty shells and one deformed slug were found in the crime scene.

The SITG is currently studying fingerprints recovered from the victims’ van and is looking for CCTV footage from the area.

Mandaluyong City Police Chief PSSupt. Moises Villaceran said today that the crime may have been business-related since Yulo had several businesses in Metro Manila and Laguna, CNN Philippines reported.

The incident happened amid the nationwide gun ban imposed for the election season.
