With COVID-19 safety measures still in place, train passengers may soon ride the LRT-1 with QR-based tickets, the Light Rail Manila Corporation announced.
The company proposed the implementation of a QR-based ticketing system that can be purchased through mobile apps and scanned at QR acceptance terminals installed at entrance and exit gates, according to a post on their official Facebook page.
Together with payment partner AF Payments, Inc., the Light Rail Manila Corporation presented their proof of concept to the Department of Transportation. Once approved, this will help commuters travel faster and easier, the company said.
The light rail operator added that they plan to implement the new system within the first quarter of 2022 upon the DOTr’s approval.
The QR system is one of several upgrades lined up for the LRT-1 system. The Cavite extension of the light rail transit, which will add an 11.7 Baclaran-Bacoor, Cavite segment to its current 18.1-kilometer train line, was at “60 percent completion” in August this year, the operator said. The LRT-1 system currently serves 20 stations from Baclaran in Manila to Roosevelt in Quezon City.
