Post ‘Undas’ clean-up may take as long as three days

Administrators of Metro Manila’s major cemeteries say they need at least three days to clean up the rubbish left behind by visitors from this year’s observance of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day.

This was the statement made today by Manila South Cemetery’s Henry Dy when asked how long it will take them to clean up. Dy was pleased to note though that there was relatively less garbage compared to last year because fewer people brought in food inside the cemetery.

Additionally, a non-government organization assisted them by picking up recyclable plastic.

Manila North Cemetery Administrator Edgardo Noriega said they have disposed of two truckloads of garbage as of Friday, Nov. 2.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), for its part, said that it has collected 35 truckloads of garbage from eight cemeteries in Metro Manila.

Francis Martinez, MMDA Metro Parkway Clearing Group head, revealed that they have collected nine trucks apiece from the South and North cemeteries, five trucks each from the La Loma Public Cemetery and the Loyola Memorial Park in Marikina City, three trucks from the Libingan ng mga Bayani in Taguig City, two trucks from the Valenzuela Public Cemetery and one truck each from the San Juan Public Cemetery and the Barrachs Cemetery in Pasig City.

Martinez stressed that the MMDA clean-up will continue over the weekend. He added that they have fielded 2,378 personnel from its traffic management, clearing and emergency response units to Metro Manila’s 29 public and private cemeteries, the Philippine Star reported.
