Notice anything wrong with this NBI sketch of a murder suspect?

Welcome to the new normal.

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has just released a sketch for the suspected gunman in the murder of human rights lawyer Rex Fernandez, who was shot dead in an ambush in Cebu City in August 2021.

In what may be standard practice until we achieve herd immunity, the cartographic sketch had the bottom half of the suspect’s face obscured by a mask. No, not a traditional bank robber’s ski mask or even Casa de Papel-style Dali masks, but the standard medical masks that have hidden humanity’s faces since the pandemic began.

Obviously the investigators can’t just make everything up, so this is probably the best they could honestly do. Despite the tragedy of the case, however, Facebook users were quick to point out the absurdity of the situation. “That narrows it down to 110 million people,” reads one comment.

Others decided they would be proactive and lend the NBI a hand by filling in the blanks:

While others posted masked selfies declaring themselves “safe” from suspicion, still others decided that they had enough information to positively identify the gunman:

There were a few commenters who recognized the gravity of the situation, and reminded everyone that a cold-blooded murder is no laughing matter. Perhaps the most accurate summation of the situation, however, is a comment on the Inquirer’s Facebook post, saying succintly, “This is a serious matter, and ridiculous at the same time.”
