This is not the way to start the new year with a bang.

A man sustained injuries on his thigh after getting shot by a purok (district) chairman in the village of Calinan in Davao City on New Year’s Day.

The suspect was identified as 70-year-old Agustin Alfeche, while the victim was identified as 49-year-old Joel Omboon, ABS-CBN News reported.

According to the investigation, Alfeche allegedly told Omboon not to hurt the latter’s former lover on Tuesday night.

Instead of taking heed, the victim allegedly threw a rock at the suspect, which prompted Alfeche to shoot Omboon.

Alfeche said that he merely shot the victim in self-defense.

“I only told him [not to hurt his former lover] because it’s not right to hurt a woman,” Alfeche was quoted saying in Cebuano by ABS-CBN News.

He, however, admitted that the firearm he used did not have a license, the report added.

Police are currently looking for the gun the suspect allegedly used which allegedly fell and went missing when he fled the crime scene.

Police also have a different theory about Alfeche’s motive.

Chief Insp. Arquiomedes Wesley, the station commander of the Calinan Police, told ABS-CBN News that this could be a love triangle situation.

He said in a mix of English and Filipino: “Joel (Omboon) had a former lover, Ms. Suzette. When Suzette went abroad, she broke up with him. Joel tried to get back together with Suzette, [but] then allegedly there was gossip that the district chairman (Alfeche) and Suzette were in a relationship.”

Alfeche will face charges of frustrated homicide.
