DOH logs 10 new Zika cases, total now 33

The Department of Health (DOH) on Tuesday confirmed 10 new reported cases of the mosquito-borne Zika virus in the country.

Of the new cases, which have brought the total to 33, two were detected in Calamba, Laguna while one case each was recorded in Bacoor, Makati, Antipolo, Muntinlupa, Mandaluyong, Manila, Caloocan, and Las Piñas.

So far, Western Visayas still has the highest number of cases at 12, followed by Metro Manila with 11, Calabarzon with 9 and Central Visayas with one.

The DOH is still verifying information that the Zika patient from Las Piñas is pregnant.

Zika, which is transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito or through sexual intercourse, is usually not life-threatening but has been linked to a rise in birth defects in other countries, where hundreds of babies have been born with unusually small heads in recent years.

Health officials urged the public the public to destroy breeding sites for mosquitoes and use insect repellent.

People experiencing Zika symptoms — skin rashes, fever, red eyes, and headache — were also instructed to immediately consult with doctors. —with reports from Dennis Datu, dzMM and Kori Quintos, ABS-CBN News
