A total of 276 carnivorous plants illegally smuggled from the Netherlands were seized at a warehouse in Pasig City by the Bureau of Customs-NAIA (BOC-NAIA) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
With an estimated street value of P150,000, the illegal shipment included sundew plants, Venus flytraps, butterworts, and three species of pitcher plants. According to a press release by the BOC, “Carnivorous plants have already been globally declared as critically endangered and are among the world’s rarest and most endangered plants. The collection and trade of these insect-eating plants are restricted under Republic Act (RA) No. 9147 otherwise known as the Philippine Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act.”
The intercepted shipment was turned over to the DENR for rehabilitation and care.
