CNN Philippines lays off dozens of employees

Some employees of TV news network CNN Philippines found out yesterday that they won’t have jobs for very much longer. They were given a layoff notice that their positions would be cut as part of — what the network’s president called — a “rightsizing” program.

The news first came from media advocacy Facebook page Buhay Media yesterday.

According to Rappler, the layoff notice dated Jan. 11 was signed by Nine Media Corporation (CNN Philippines’ parent company) President Armie Jarin Bennett.

In the letter, the company said that employees who were laid off will still receive compensation, even if they no longer show up for work regularly; this is to help them find new jobs. Their last day in CNN Philippines will be on Feb. 10.

Among those given notices were news editors, cameramen, engineers, coordinators, graphics artists, floor directors, and associate producers.

Coconuts Manila was also able to independently verify through a source within CNN Philippines that more than a dozen employees indeed received layoff notices, although we could not confirm an exact number.

This is the second round of layoffs since the news network rebranded as CNN Philippines from Solar News in 2015, when they laid off over 70 employees.
