Amid criticisms from student groups, the Commission on Higher Education on Monday approved the increase in tuition and other school fees in 268 private higher education institutions (HEIs) for the academic year 2017-2018.

The approved applications represent 16 percent of the total number of HEIs in the country.

“CHED said the approved average increase in tuition is 6.96 percent or PHP86.68 per unit, while increase in other school fees is 6.9 percent or PHP243,” reports ABS-CBN News.

The highest tuition fee increase per unit was at Metro Manila with 4.75 percent or PHP119.55

According to the Government Assistance to Students and Teachers in Private Education Act, 70 percent of the increase in tuition should be allotted for the increase in salaries and other benefits of teaching and non-teaching personnel; 20 percent will go to facilities improvement, and the remaining 10 percent will be for return on investment or for operating expenses.

Last year, the CHED allowed 304 HEIS to implement increases in tuition and other fees.
