Bongbong Marcos won’t run for senate in 2019 because he ‘already won’ as VP

It’s been nearly two years since the last national election, but Ferdinand “Bongbong”  Marcos Jr. is not giving up on his election protest, insisting that he won the vice presidency in 2016.

During a gathering by the Manila Bay yesterday, Marcos, told reporters that he does not plan to run for senate in the 2019 midterm elections because — at least in his mind — he already won.

“Why would I run as senator if I already won as vice president? What I need to do is reveal who the people really voted [in the last elections],” Marcos said in Filipino.

The former senator ran for vice president alongside presidential candidate Miriam Defensor Santiago in 2016 but lost to Leni Robredo.

However, Marcos has been protesting the election results since they came out. He alleges that Robredo’s camp cheated by adding another server to the electronically transmitted votes. A ballot recount is scheduled for next month and will start in the provinces of Iloilo, Negros Oriental, and Camarines Sur, where Robredo is from.

To run for senate, Marcos said, would be like abandoning his protest.

“I won’t stop protesting this because I believe that I was cheated during the last elections. I will reveal the true vote count so people can know who was really chosen to become vice president,” he said.

Marcos lost to Robredo by 263,473 votes.
