In the latest episode update on the presidential race for the May 2022 elections, senator Bong Go has announced that he was withdrawing his candidacy, officially leaving the Duterte-led PDP-Laban Cusi faction without a standard-bearer.
In true melodramatic fashion, Go prepared a statement as he was interviewed on the sidelines of a Bonifacio Day celebration, citing that his “heart and mind were contradicting with his actions.”
Go also said that his family was against his presidential run, adding that this may not be his time yet.

“Ayaw rin talaga ng aking pamilya kaya naisip ko na siguro ay hindi ko pa panahon sa ngayon. Diyos lang ang nakakaalam kung kailan ang tamang panahon.” (My family also does not want me to run so I thought that maybe this is not my time yet. Only God knows when the right time is.)
Cranking the emotions up a notch, Go once again alluded to his “father-son” relationship with Duterte, and added that he would remain loyal to him forever.
“Ayaw ko ring maipit si Pangulong Duterte. Higit pa sa tatay ang pagmamahal ko sa kanya–matanda na po siya at marami na rin siyang naibigay para sa bayan, ayaw ko na pong dagdagan pa ang kanyang problema. Nananatili akong tapat sa kanya at nangako akong sasamahan ko po siya habambuhay.” (I don’t want President Duterte to get caught up in this. I love him like a father — he is old and has done much for the country, I don’t want to add to his problems. I remain loyal and will be with him forever.)
Go’s withdrawal from the race is the most recent turn of events, after President Duterte’s daughter Sara filed for the vice-presidential seat under Lakas-CMD, running alongside Bongbong Marcos, whom the president alluded to as a weak leader and insinuated as a cocaine user.
Certain candidates were quick to act on the announcement—particularly Manila mayor Isko Moreno, who said that he would welcome the president’s endorsement, an interesting turn of events after a heated word war between the parties, with the President calling Moreno a “call boy.”
