ABS-CBN broadcaster Doris Bigornia had a heart attack and will be undergoing open-heart surgery, her colleague Alvin Elchico announced yesterday.

Elchico announced Bigornia’s health woes, with permission from her family, on their Teleradyo program “SRO” last night. He said Bigornia was rushed to the hospital on Sunday after the heart attack and is currently at the intensive care unit (ICU).

“She needs open-heart surgery. Her family is asking for prayers, in the name of the family of Doris Bigornia, the Muse of the Masses, we at DZMM are asking for your prayers,” Elchico said.

“Let’s pray that Doris will emerge victorious from this obstacle because until now [she is in the ICU]. I was able to talk to her, she is conscious, but she needs open-heart surgery after that heart attack,” he added.

Bigornia is one of the Philippines’ more controversial journalists. Metropolitan Manila Development Authority Assistant Secretary Celine Pialago called her the “devil” in December for making an allegedly “misleading” report about the re-opening of a U-turn slot in Quezon City. In 2016, a Davao City-based GMA reporter complained that Bigornia threatened to hit his colleague when she was told to step aside so she wouldn’t appear on their camera.

But the 55-year-old host is also known as one of ABS-CBN’s most highly regarded broadcasters and has won numerous accolades for her work.
