A doctor died early this week after figuring in a road accident in Pandacan, Manila, a health official announced last night.

Maria Teresa Ballat Dajao, 54, was hit by a 10-wheeler truck near Quirino Avenue after ending her shift at the Kahilum Health Center on Wednesday night, ABS-CBN News reports. The doctor was rushed to Ospital ng Manila, but was later declared dead.

“The City of Manila mourns the passing of Dra. Dajao and deeply values her significant contributions in providing the highest standard of health care for Manileños,” City Health Officer Arnold Pangan said in a statement yesterday.

Dajao was born in the capital and graduated with a Psychology degree at the Pamantasan ng Lunsod ng Maynila. She also studied at Fatima College of Medicine and the University of the Philippines.

She was appointed to Kahilum Center in 2006, and she was described by Pangan as a “hardworking and dependable” physician.

“Dra. Dajao, with her significant contributions providing [a] higher standard of healthcare services to the Manilans (sic) will be sorely missed by her colleagues and friends in Manila Health Department,” Pangan said.

The 36-year-old driver of the truck who reportedly killed the doctor was arrested by the police, but he was later freed after Dajao’s family refused to press charges against the suspect.
