2 men shot by opponent in basketball game

Another intense game of basketball in the Philippines ended in violence when two men were allegedly shot by one of their opponents on Saturday.

The incident happened in Barangay (Village) Buenavista, Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur. The victims were identified as brothers Raymond and Richard Manlanat, GMA News’ Saksi reported yesterday.

Raymond, 21 years old, is now safe but Richard, 22, is in critical condition and is suffering from a severe bullet wound on the chest.

The brothers had just won a two on two game against two carpenters — Haber “Bob” Sarapuddin, 33 years old, and Bayoyoy Maknon, 23 years old — before the incident happened, according to Sun Star.

Police investigations show that the four got into an argument after the game, GMA News reported. The sore losers eventually went home but allegedly returned with guns at around 6:05pm, Sun Star wrote.

It was Sarapuddin who allegedly shot the brothers with a caliber 38 revolver. Maknon, on the other hand, had a caliber 45 pistol and allegedly served as the lookout.

The victims were immediately brought to the Zamboanga Del Sur Medical Center after the incident, according to RMN.

As strange as it is, basketball-related violence is fairly common in the Philippines, where the sport is extremely popular. Just in January, a game in Tagbina, Surigao del Sur ended in a violent stabbing that killed one person.

A man in Zamboanga City was also stabbed and killed by his cousin in June last year after getting into an argument about a Cleaveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors finals game.
