Veteran actor Spanky Manikan, 75, died yesterday after a months-long battle with lung cancer.

According to ABS-CBN News, his death was confirmed through a text message from Manikan’s wife actress Susan Africa to her manager Ed Instrella. Africa said in the text message that her husband “peacefully joined his Creator at 11:41 today.”

“Please pray for his eternal peace and happiness. Thank you for everything,” Africa added.

Last August, Manikan’s friends in the film industry began raising funds for his treatment after his illness drained his family’s savings.

Manikan is a veteran theater and film actor known for movies such as Bona, Broken Marriage, and Maynila sa Kuko ng Liwanag.

In 1981, he won the best supporting actor award in the Metro Manila Film Festival for his role in the Ishmael Bernal classic, Himala.
