SM Malls welcome regular screenings of indie films

What a great time to be a fan of the local movie industry!

No need to wait for special screenings or film festivals. Independent films will now be shown in SM Cinemas on a regular basis.

According to Inquirer, “the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) and SM Cinema have inked a three-year partnership to give local independent films more exposure in commercial theaters.”

This move follows the success of the recent Metro Manila Film Festival which went through an extreme makeover last year (The usual suspects Vic Sotto and Vice Ganda were notably absent!)

“It is a known fact that independent filmmakers face many challenges including preconceived notions but everyone agrees that many of our talented directors and actors started out in independent films and so there is indeed a need to nurture and support them by giving their films more exposure, more venues to reach more people,” said FDCP chair Liza Diño.

The move is SM’s way of showing support for the local film industry.

“This is our way of helping them show their films to a wider audience because we believe in their talent and the work that they do for the local movie industry,” said SM Lifestyle Entertainment president Edgar Tejerero.

The participating branches include SM Megamall, SM North Edsa, SM Fairview, SM Iloilo, SM Southmall, SM Cebu, SM Bacoor and SM Mall of Asia (or SM Davao or SM Lanang). The agreement will take effect in the first half of the year.
