So, it takes a movie to convince people to try something new in the bedroom.

“Distributors of sex toys in the Philippines are experiencing a spike in sales and customer interest following the release of the widely talked about movie adaptation of the bestselling erotic novel, Fifty Shades of Grey,” reports Jose Bimbo F. Santos on InterAksyon.com.

The report cited Eleanor Lung, owner of the decades old shop Pleasure Place in Pasig, who revealed that “the one product that has been the most sought-after now following the popularity of Fifty Shades is handcuffs.”

The report noted: “In the film, high-profile businessman Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) subjects Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) to various BDSM (bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, sadism and masochism) bedroom practices.”

Naturally, handcuffs are part of the BDSM deal.

“A lot of customers are now coming in to buy handcuffs. It’s the handcuffs that really made a big impact,” Leung said.

The report also quoted Jamie Francis Dy, who owns the Love Store in Quezon City, who said, “The movie helped in terms of advertising the use of sex toys.” He said he has experienced “around 20% increase in sales.”

The report pointed out that “aside from shops with physical stores, there are now various online merchants selling adult merchandise.”
