Say hello to Ocean Lam. She’s one of Hong Kongs’s leading underground DJs, and she’s heading over to Manila to give us a taste of her music on Subverse on Feb 18 at TIME in Manila.

Of course, we already know all about Subverse. It’s the monthly underground house and techno event organized by DJs Miguel Libre and Raphael Carbonell. Recently they guested Shanghai-based Hungarian duo, PANDAH of Attache Records.

So, Coconuts Manila caught up with Ocean Lam herself to get a glimpse of what to expect from her Manila performance. As an added treat, Ocean has sent us an exclusive mix for the event, which you may find here.

Coconuts: Can you describe the underground electronic music scene in HK?
Ocean Lam: Underground scene in HK is still very small, but it’s growing. We have Sonar HK in April. This will help more people get into electronic music and understand that what we do is not an easy thing.

Also, we now have new promoters doing nice events in outdoor venues, and mini-festivals. Everyone in the scene helps each other, which I’m very glad to see. We just need more people to support and have fun with us!

C: What’s the best way to describe your creative process?
OL: What I play is usually focused on what will make the crowd dance using hypnotic beats, that’s why my party and podcast are both called Hypnotic. I like to play with different genres like dub / techno, deep house, acid, Detroit techno, and minimal in my set. These are more interesting for myself and the crowd.

Also, Social Room allows me to host many quality artists-friends from overseas coming to HK. Through this, I learn a lot more from them. When I see people come with nice feedback and when they tell me they had fun, it makes me very happy.

C: What are you like when you’re not making music? What’s an ordinary day for you?
OL: I have another full-time job as a furniture and interior design material supplier, which is quite different to DJ-ing but I am glad that I can still manage both

C: What aspect of Manila’s music scene interests you?
OL: I played at Time in Manila a few years ago. It was a great night. People who came are open and they enjoyed. I was very happy. I look forward to coming again on the 18th for the Subverse party.

There are many good producers released on the label called Asia Music. They are doing a great job in the Manila underground music scene.

C: Can you tell us about the exclusive mix you made for this event?
OL: I selected some tracks from labels Serialism, Biotop and artist Youandewan, GoldFFinch, CRS+BRG which I like very much. The music is a bit deep, dark, groovy mood. It’s a good warm up for Feb 18.
