After a week-long wait, it’s finally official: Filipino journalist Atom Araullo has moved to GMA Network.
It was announced last night on the network’s flagship news program 24 Oras. News anchors Vicky Morales, Arnold Clavio, and Mel Tiangco introduced the segment with vague descriptions of a “returning news personality.”
The reveal was done with a continuation of the teaser video posted online on Wednesday. “Atom Araullo, your new Kapuso,” the journalist said when the camera first focuses on his face.
(For those who don’t know, Kapuso is what GMA Network calls its talents and employees. The word roughly translates to “one heart.”)
Araullo said that he decided to move to the network because he was eager to learn more as a journalist.
“In the field of journalism, I still want to learn and I think this is one of the best [places] to learn new things about journalism, so I’m really excited,” he said in a mix of Filipino and English.
He shared that he’s interested in making documentaries and thinks the network is very good at producing them. Araullo’s first project for GMA will focus on the state, issues, and challenges of Philippine seas. He will also host the documentary show i-Witness.
Last week, Araullo announced that he was leaving ABS-CBN, GMA’s rival network, after having worked there for more than a decade. Before ABS-CBN, he was a reporter for the GMA program 5 and Up and had a sports segment called Atomic Sports on 24 Oras.
