No money for Shakespeare: UK-based theater company cancels Manila tour

Award-winning theater company Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre announced today that the previously scheduled Manila staging of Macbeth and A Midsummer Night’s Dream have been canceled due to low ticket sales.

The two Shakespeare plays were initially slated for a run from Sept 17 to 22 at the Solaire Resorts and Casino in Parañaque City.

A statement posted on the York-based theater group’s Facebook account said, “It is with great sadness that we have made the decision to cancel this season. The team at Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre was incredibly excited about bringing those superb productions to Manila audiences, so this is not a decision we have taken lightly.”

James Cundall, the founder of the Rose Theatre, said in a separate statement that tickets didn’t sell well despite the significant amount of public attention that the now-canceled shows received.

“The publicity we have achieved from the media in Manila is unbelievable and we are immensely grateful for that, but sadly this has not translated into ticket sales, and despite an intense and costly marketing campaign, we have not been able to sell anywhere near the number needed to make the project financially viable,” he said.
