Promotions for the film Crazy Rich Asians are in full force now that there are only about two weeks left before its premiere on Aug. 22.
To cater to Filipino moviegoers, Warner Brothers even released on Sunday a trailer inviting the public in Filipino to watch the film.
Less than a minute long, the preview features Filipino-American actor Nico Santos who plays a supporting role in the film. In the video, he says: “Kamusta Philippines, Nico Santos po para sa Crazy Rich Asians. Kwento po it ito ng pamilya, pagibig, at lahat ng drama at saya sa loob nito.”
Which translates to: “Hello Philippines, this is Nico Santos for Crazy Rich Asians. It’s the story of family, love, and all the drama and joy that come with it.”
Some scenes of the film are shown before Santos then continues to say in English that he’s “proud to be a part of an all-Asian cast in a big Hollywood movie.”
In the end, he invites people to watch the film, again in Filipino: “Kita kita po tayo sa sa Crazy Rich Asians, palabas na sa Aug. 22 in Philippine cinemas nationwide.” (“Let’s see each other in Crazy Rich Asians, premiering on Aug. 22 in Philippine cinemas nationwide.”)
Having the trailer for a major Hollywood film in Filipino is in itself a novelty since movies (and their trailers) shown here are rarely ever dubbed or subtitled.
And just in time for Buwan ng Wika (National Language Month) too!
Crazy Rich Asians is the first Hollywood film in 25 years with an all-Asian cast. The film is based on a novel by Kevin Kwan, which tells the story of Chinese-American Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) who discovers that her boyfriend Nick Young (Henry Golding) actually comes from a (crazy) wealthy family in Singapore.
While there are no major Filipino characters in the Crazy Rich Asians book, its second and third installments feature supporting Filipino characters.
Apart from Santos, popular Filipino actress Kris Aquino also has a cameo appearance in the upcoming film.
